i got a message about our contract being cancelled because she's gone and her phone is cut off and i scried for her but there's nothing, she's nowhere, she's gone again
[ They live in the same house, under the same roof. They're even in the same bed. There is absolutely no reason for Nate to arrange for a paper bird to fly down their chimney and into their bedroom, avoiding the paws of three dogs and two cats, and very narrowly avoiding the claws of one flying cat, in order to drop a jewellery box into Caleb's hands.
And then it explodes, showering pink and purple paper hearts all over them both.
Inside the box is a pair of nipple rings, both set with blue diamonds, and connected with a fine chain. There's no note to explain what they do, because Nate knew he'd be here when the box was opened.
So now, he's sitting up, picking paper hearts out of his hair and grinning. ]
literally all noah's friends are gone he asked me to look after the two creatures they had because he can't do it - he's a ghost, he disappears sometimes. more when he's sad, so that's a thing
i said yes, so...we're gonna have a weird little fox and unicorn around i hope that's ok. i don't want them to be alone but if it's a problem then i can keep them at the theatre with the others, it's just that they aren't for rehoming so i don't want anyone else to like want them
also i said noah could stay for a few days if that's ok too he can stay in my room, it's not like i ever sleep there anyway and actually he doesn't sleep because of being a ghost, and
i know this is a lot, i just he's sad and he's my friend and that's it really. i don't want him to be alone
Hey, Caleb, you busy...? It's just I'm getting a contract written up, finally, and I was wondering if you could look it over and make sure it all makes sense?
i have to tell you something but before i do, i need you to remember how great you think it is that i like to help people with healing and protection and all of that
[ The Theatre is familiar, but...strange, in its familiarity. It feels like something from a different life. The smells, the feeling. Nate's hand in the wall, correctly picking out where the wallpaper's frayed because this is where his hand always lands when he steps out of this portal, and for some reason he's never repaired it.
He's dressed weirdly. The jeans are his own, the same pair he'd been sleeping in. His shirt is Nick's. It's pink, and only just about falls to Nate's belt. Beneath it, the new full sleeve tattoo full of interlocking circles is visible along Nate's left arm and part of the way up his neck. The diagonal scar across his throat, hidden for so long with magic, is visible too. There's more new tattoos, dotting across his arms and his body, some carefully woven with spells. Others just look like words, odd words, scribbled in haste.
He follows the smell of brewing potions to the lab, where Caleb is. The sight is unreal to him. Caleb sitting there, watching a potion. Nate knows what it is by the smell, recognises it as a recipe from an old book. But his head tilts. ]
You should add a clove, [ He says, softly. ] The book doesn't say it, but it helps with the bitterness. Doesn't change the effect, just the taste.
[ He comes in to lean against one of the tables, and closes the door behind him. ]
